BMX Silver Dollar site to relocate by year end
CHICO, Calif .– The threat to relocate has been intermittent for the past two years, but now the town of Chico is asking the Silver Dollar BMX site to relocate by the end of the year.
“We weren’t fully prepared for this calendar. It certainly speeds it up for us,” said Philip Wysocki, track operator at Silver Dollar BMX.
The Silver Dollar BMX track has been at its current location for 11 years. Over 600 runners have used it this year and 85% of runners are under the age of 18.
“It has the potential to put a lot of riders, and a lot of young riders off the track if there is a gap,” said Wysocki.
Silver Dollar BMX said the shift in speed comes as the town of Chico continues to navigate the recent homeless trial.
The city has told Action News Now it cannot discuss issues related to homelessness, but the idea frustrates some people and others are hoping for a solution.
“You just create a problem and increase the population with people who are unwilling to help themselves,” said Gus McDonald, who works near the current BMX site.
“For everyone’s sake, I’m sure everyone would love to see it resolved,” Ted Hirst, who lives in Chico, told Action News Now.
The goal is to move the race track to a new location north on Cohasset Road, between Chico Airport and Little League Airport on the west side. They are trying to move within the next 90 days, in time for the start of their new season on January 1.
“We are trying to close some budget deficits created by the accelerated schedule,” Wysocki said. “I think there is a possibility of anxiety and all we can do is work to reassure our community that we are doing our best for Advance.”
Chico City Manager Mark Orme told Action News Now that they are providing funding for the construction of the site and the track, but community support will be needed to make it happen.
“It really is a family sport,” Wysocki said. “We have moms and dads and siblings all riding together, so it provides that kind of opportunity.”
They plan to start racing on the new track as soon as it is ready.
