Class 2A State Baseball Tournament: Glencoe-Silver Lake Wins State Championship
It took just nine shots for the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team to take the lead.
Shortstop Jacob Christianson, wide receiver Zachary Voelz and third baseman Beau Lepel, the top three hitters in the Panthers’ order, had three hits each in a 12-hit offense. Christianson and Voelz also scored three points each. This offensive exit was more than enough for pitcher Drew Hedtke. Glencoe-Silver Lake (26-3) topped the opposition 36-3 in three state tournament games. The Panthers were finalists in 2007 and won consolation finals in 1996 and 2014.
Christianson opened the game with a single, then Voelz was hit with a pitch. Lepel chose Christianson and the Panthers were gone. Hedtke was dominant from the start. He allowed only one runner to reach the base. Second-year pitcher Ethan Hoffman, the first of three Belle Plaine pitchers, worked the first 3 2/3 innings and suffered loss. Belle Plaine, also Class AA runner-up in 2016, finished the season 20-5.
