Republican motto: Debt forgiveness for me, but not for you.
The Republican reaction to President Biden’s very limited bailout of millions of young Americans struggling to build their lives under the crippling weight of student debt has ended up being a kind of exposition of Republicans themselves.
The Republican Party has a decades-long record of opposing anything — and I mean anything — that helps We the People. They oppose, and have the votes and the speeches to prove they oppose, spending any part of the taxpayers money for the taxpayers
They oppose any measure, no matter how much it would help We the People, or how much not doing so would hurt us, it would benefit the people of this country. They have blocked and fought all efforts to build roads, expand public transportation, or support American infrastructure. They managed to stop the government from spending money to build this country for decades.
When President Biden succeeded – almost miraculously – in passing a recent bill aimed at developing America’s infrastructure, all Republicans voted against it.
Republicans have drained money from public schools for decades. Here in Oklahoma, once the Republicans took control of state politics, they began closing schools, firing teachers, and funneling public school money into the coffers of “privatized” schools. and religious schools run by their fucking clergy.
Republicans claim they are the ‘party of life’ but voted unanimously against mandatory paid maternity leave, health care, equal pay and a living wage, which would help mothers to choose life for their babies. Here in Oklahoma, Republicans killed a bill I sponsored that would have allowed pregnant women to go to their doctors and rape victims to go to court if they needed to. without being fired.
“Pro-life” Republicans also killed the $35 cap on insulin. I personally know people with diabetes who cannot afford insulin and whose health has been devastated because of it. Republicans killed people with that vote; killed them directly, deliberately and knowingly.
You can talk about it all day, but Republicans are not pro-life. They don’t have a single issue to bring to the American people about what they want to do for this country. All I’ve heard from them for months is how they will “investigate” their political opponents and who they will exact revenge on if they take power in Congress in November. Using the power of government to engage in grudges and petty revenge seems to be their whole platform.
The level of hypocritical disregard for the welfare of the people of this country reached a surprising crescendo this week when President Biden announced a student loan forgiveness of between $10,000 and $20,000. The entire Republican machinery of media, elected officials and religious prostitutes has spoken out against every young person who has used student loans to get an education and build a life and is now trying to start a family in this country.
I’ve seen comments from people like Tucker Carlson with his $420 million net worth and $33 million a year base salary that called young American adults in debt. “drug-addicted robots with no job prospects.”
“Catholic” apostolates, media and ministries that are funded by right-wing money are piling up in predictable ways. They filtered gnats and swallowed camels trying to show how immoral and against Catholic teaching the forgiveness of this debt was as interpreted and edited by them on behalf of their greedy backers. Their Protestant prostitute brothers joined them.
At the same time, elected Republicans, YouTubers and bloggers have outdone themselves in attacking young college-educated American men and women. They called these young adults anything but decent human beings. They ignored the effects on them and on the future of this country of the crushing burden of debt imposed on them because they wanted an education in the American school system.
The whole thing was a right-wing orgy of name-calling and indiscriminate degradation of an entire age group of Americans. It was the ugliness of the rapacious greed of the billionaires who took control of the Republican Party in action.
Notice, I used the word “greed”. I used it because “greed” is the operational motivation behind all this hysterical activity carried out by indignant millionaire talking heads, fake professional Christians and Republican puppet politicians. Each of these people has one important thing in common with all of these people: they are where they are because they sold their souls to a small group of fascist billionaires who are trying to use them to destroy our democracy so that they can transfer the whole treasure of the United States of America in their own hands.
Each of these talking heads, fake religious leaders and puppet politicians are funded and owned by people whose sole purpose is to bring home every dollar in this country to their own bank accounts. None of these people are able to tell the truth about anything. If any of them suddenly developed a conscience and started preaching the gospel, or reporting the truth, or enacting legislation that would make this country grow and edify its people, the billionaires who own it would destroy it.
That’s why they said those things. I don’t think they believe what they said, because I don’t think they believe anything. I think they say what they are told to say and belief is irrelevant.
The comedy of this particular bit of wailing and whining and feverish outrage over student loan forgiveness is that the vast majority of these people got PPP loans from the government and – get ready for that – they got got their PPP loans ‘forgiven’.
PPP loans were created during the worst of the COVID pandemic to prevent small businesses from sinking. They were supposed to help family businesses survive the pandemic’s cash crunch. I think they saved a lot of people’s livelihoods.
However, the Republican Senate installed the grift in legislation that allowed rich boys, fucking clergy and all other crooks to take the stand as well. Remember, PPP loans were made when Trump was president and Republicans controlled the Senate. I read an article saying that Marco Rubio was the senator who actually wrote this deal, but it was all the Senate Republicans who made it law.
The most awful part of the scam was that these big boys got their loans “forgiven” later. I’m not talking about part of the loan in the same way that Biden is exempt from part of the student debt. I mean everything of it, including the very minimal interest was “forgiven”.
Turns out the same people who are screaming and screaming and foaming at their mouths because young Americans might actually have some of the student debt that’s stopping them from getting married, having kids, buying a house and to live their life they literally got billions of dollars of debt canceled for themselves. I’m not talking about the same group of people. I mean the exact same individual people who scoff at $10,000 debt forgiveness for people who can’t afford to buy a home got millions of dollars of their own debt that they didn’t have you don’t even need to be forgiven in the first place.
Student loans are for going to school. They are there to give people hope and a future. The $20,000 rebate is for people who have obtained Pell grants. I know people who went to college with Pell Grants. They were poor children. I mean poor kids. Without these grants and loans, they would have had no hope of living the American dream.
If they end up with so much student debt that they can’t move forward in life, they still have no hope.
Republicans are attacking public schools, refusing to provide health care, destroying wages, blocking all public support for ordinary people. They make sure jobs don’t pay student debt.
At the same time, they twisted an attempt to save small businesses in a national crisis into another barrel of pork for the shamelessly rich and then forgave those same shamelessly rich for paying back what they was due. They turned PPP loans into another barrel of pork for the rich.
The only silver lining in all of this is that they were called out for their hypocrisy this week. Lots of people took to Twitter and posted the huge sums of money that the moralizing attackers on student debt forgiveness had themselves forgiven.
For once they were called for what they are. Let’s hope this happens again and again.
