Shaili Singh wins silver in long jump at World Under-20 Championships
Long jumper Shaili Singh won silver at the World Under-20 Athletics Championships on Sunday with a best jump of 6.59m. European Champion Maja Askag of Sweden gained just one centimeter taking the gold with a best jump of 6.60m. This is India’s third medal at the championships after Amit Khatri won silver in the 10,000m walk and the Indian team took bronze in the mixed 4x400m relay.
Earlier today, Donald Makimairaj set his personal best of 15.82m in the triple jump event, but finished in fourth place.
Priya Mohan also set her personal best of 52.77 seconds in the 400m final on Saturday, but ended up in fourth place.
Shaili, 17, coached by former jumper Bobby George and his wife Anju Bobby George, had to settle for the silver medal despite a brilliant performance in Nairobi in which she improved her personal best twice, once to qualify for the final (6.48) then in the final – 6.59 meters.
Shaili took the lead with a 6.59m jump on her third jump, but Sweden’s Maja Askag crossed 6.60 on her fourth jump and won the gold as Shaili missed both attempts. following and was only able to clear 6.37 meters in the sixth and final jump. Maja had also won gold in the women’s triple jump earlier in the championships.
Shaili started off with a 6.34 identical to his first two jumps, but managed the big jump on the next attempt to take the lead.
