Weed Week: August 2022 | Seyfarth Shaw LLP
[author: Susan Ryan]
Welcome to The Week in Weed, your Friday look at what’s happening in the world of legalized marijuana.
This week, we have news on state ballot initiatives in Missouri and Arkansas. Cory Booker might be willing to support cannabis banks. And finally, the DANK Research bill made its Capitol Hill debut.
Will be Missouri will voters decide on legal cannabis in november? We will know soon. Lawyers may not have met the signature requirement in two of the state’s congressional districts, but we won’t know for sure until the review is complete. Expect an announcement next week. If the initiative goes to the polls, a recent survey indicates that it is likely to pass.
Meanwhile, next door in Arkansas, the Secretary of State determined that there were enough signatures to put adult use on the ballot. Sounds good for the advocacy group backing the measure, doesn’t it? Yes, but… Yesterday, the Board of Election Commissioners decreases to certify the measurement. Some commissioners thought voters would be confused on issues such as THC limits. Next step for defenders? The State Supreme Court.
BOOKER AND BANK
Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) has been an advocate for federal legalization of cannabis for many years. He also spoke out against marijuana banking legislation. Recently, however, he noted he would be willing to compromise on the matter. Its Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act (CAOA) may not pass, and the SAFE Act appears more likely to garner enough votes to pass Congress. If social equity language were added to SAFE, Senator Booker seems ready to lend his support.
Often, congressional leaders will give their bills a name that will make them an easy-to-remember acronym. Consider the PACT Act, which has been in the news lately. Recently, Reps. Scott Peters (D-CA) and Dave Joyce (R-OH) introduced the “Key Cannabis Research Development and Nationalization Act”. Our friends at the excellent news source, Marijuana Moment, aren’t sure if the authors meant to name their bill DANK Cannabis Research Act, but I think we all know they did.
Stay safe and be well everyone – we’ll see you next week!
