Why DART is pushing back the opening date of the Silver Line to DFW Airport
The opening of the long-awaited Dallas Area Rapid Transit silver line has been postponed again and will now open two years after it was originally scheduled to begin carrying passengers between Dallas / Fort Worth Airport and Plano.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit north Texas, the line was slated to open in 2022, but has now been pushed back twice due to construction delays and unresolved deals.
According to DART spokesman Gordon Shattles, the recent setback was in part triggered by delays in land acquisition and deals between the agency and freight operators as well as slowdowns linked to the pandemic.
Some cities the Silver Line will pass through have also requested rail design changes, causing further delays, Shattles said.
DART has yet to set a month or season for the railroad to open, but the agency plans to bring customers on board in 2024.
“The final decision on whether to begin commercial service for the DART Silver Line will be made by the DART Board of Directors,” said Shattles.
The 26-mile Silver Line has been under construction since 1990 and will travel between South East Plano and DFW Airport, stopping at 10 stations en route. According to Shattles, the trip from 12th Street in Plano to DFW Airport will take 59 minutes.
The project is expected to cost $ 1.2 billion to build.
DART is hosting a series of virtual community meetings to get feedback from residents on the construction and operation of the Silver Line. Shattles said the meetings will consist of presentations on the design and construction of the line, updates on the project’s improvement walls, and the progress of hiking and biking trails near DART stations.
“The goal of these community meetings is to ensure that our residents are engaged and informed about the progress of the long-awaited Silver Line project, and to ensure that any questions or concerns they have as they arise. construction acceleration measures are being answered, ”Shattles said.
